Advocacy for Children and Young People
Who do we support?
Children and young people age 5 to 25 years who are involved in the Children’s Hearing System and receiving social and/or healthcare services from the Children and Young People’s Planning Partnership, who ordinarily reside in the Scottish Borders, whether on a permanent or temporary basis.
What does an advocacy worker do?
- If you are a child or young person, it is important that you are able to say how You feel and what You want to happen in your life. An advocacy worker can help You do this.
- An advocacy worker can meet you before your Hearing or statutory meeting and talk to you about what is happening for you and help you speak up during the Hearing or statutory meeting.
- An advocacy worker can make sure that you understand information and that you know about your rights.
- Your advocacy worker is independent and is not part of any other service. We only work for You.
What an advocacy worker cannot do?
- We are not lawyers, so we do not give legal advice.
- We do not make any decisions about you or tell you what to do or say.
- We do not talk to other people about you unless you ask us to or if we are worried about your or someone else’s safety.
Does advocacy cost you money?
No. Our service is free.
What if you change your mind?
It is Your choice and you can start or stop advocacy at any time. It is Your decision.
How can you get an advocacy worker?
You can refer yourself or an adult can do it for you. It is important that you remember that the advocacy worker works for You and not the adult who may refer you.
