Substance Use Advocacy

Substance Use Advocacy

BIAS can provide 1:1 advocacy support to people in the Scottish Borders who have current or historic issues around treatment, access to services or support with addictions.

We can work with people identifying as in recovery, accessing services, or who still are still actively using alcohol or drugs.

An advocacy worker can:

  • Discuss your rights and options with you and support you to make an informed choice
  • Support you at meetings and in communicating with other staff to ensure that your voice and views are heard
  • Attend meetings alongside you, support you by being your voice and representing your views.
  • Make sure that staff hear what you think is the best treatment and service for you
  • Be there and be on your side.

Medical Assisted Treatments (MAT) Standards

Scottish Government has developed a set of important standards to support people who live with substance use issues. These include being fully involved in treatment planning and choices when decisions are being taken and commitments being provided with timely, appropriate supports, across a range of things impacting on recovery.

Standard 8 says “All people have access to independent advocacy support for housing, welfare and income needs.  This means that people have access to independent advocacy if they choose. Support will be provided to help with housing and financial issues.”
